ISRO placed EOS-05, India’s first dedicated imaging satellite for geosynchronous orbit, into a sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit after GSLV-F17 lifted off from Sriharikota at 2.55 am on Friday.

The 2,367-kg satellite, the heaviest payload a GSLV has carried, was injected about 18 minutes after launch from the Second Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre. Chairman V. Narayanan said the vehicle “successfully and precisely injected” EOS-05 into the intended orbit.
Unlike most Indian Earth-observation satellites in low Earth or polar orbits, EOS-05 is meant to operate about 36,000 km above the Earth and provide frequent, large-area imagery for agriculture and disaster monitoring. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the launch a proud moment for the country.
The Hindu, Indian Express and Business Standard all reported the flight as ISRO’s first successful orbital launch of 2026, after a long pause.
