A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, said it was acting to do “complete justice” and keep in view the future prospects of the young protesters. FIRs from the July protests in Delhi, Assam, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Bihar are to be treated as closed. The court also barred fresh FIRs for those dates, except that Delhi Police may register a fresh, specific case against 2,873 people identified as having serious criminal antecedents at Jantar Mantar.
CJP co-convener Saurav Das told the court that, given the government’s assurances, the group would withdraw the 5 September march. The court directed the Centre to frame a pan-India compensation policy, including for families of students who died by suicide over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, and to complete payments within three months.
