Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma on Tuesday became the first woman officer from a non-medical branch in India’s armed forces to reach two-star rank, the Indian Air Force said.

She took over as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters on 1 September. Commissioned into the IAF Education Branch on 18 June 1994, she has served at training establishments, field stations, command headquarters and Air Headquarters.
The Defence Ministry said she set up IAF Chairs of Excellence at IIT Kanpur and Pune University, and was the first woman officer from the three services to command a Sainik School, as principal of Sainik School, Kapurthala.
