The Fire and Fury Corps said the Saturday rescue was carried out in strong winds and fading daylight, in the last available landing window of the day. Crews had stripped the helicopter of non-essential equipment and flown with limited fuel to keep lift at an altitude where thin air cuts engine power.
On the slope, the pilots held a low hover with one skid touching the snow so the casualty could be taken aboard. The Tribune reported that Cheetah helicopters were used. The Army described the operation as a testament to the skill, courage and compassion of Army Aviation.
