India’s food regulator has stopped the sale of compounded hing from two widely used kitchen brands after laboratory tests found the products did not meet prescribed standards.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India prohibited Everest Food Products and Laljee Godhoo and Company, which sells under the LG brand, from selling compounded asafoetida with immediate effect. Everest samples recorded an alcohol-soluble extract as low as 0 per cent, against a required minimum of 5 per cent. Yellow and black hing powder samples were also found sub-standard.
In LG’s case, FSSAI said compounded hing samples were sub-standard and misbranded, and that six varieties of raw hing contained starch of 15 to 32 per cent against a permitted maximum of 1 per cent. Both companies have been asked to submit action plans. The facts are as reported by the Times of India, CNBC-TV18 and India Today.
